SOCIAL ACTIVITY

On Wednesday 18th the participants could enjoy the social activity: a touristic guided visit to Madrid visiting the following places:

The tour started at Melia Castilla and briefly stopped at the four new skyscrapers, which are now the highest and most characteristic buildings in town.  The bus will then drove down Paseo de la Castellana, the largest and most important street in Madrid, which divides the city into two parts.  Participants could see the Real Madrid football stadium Santiago Bernabeu, drive up Concha Espina and down the residential part of Serrano, which is also the traditionally expensive shopping street in Madrid.  They were taken to Maria de Molina and Francisco Silvela to see the bullfighting ring “Plaza de las Ventas”.

The bus drove then down Alcalá until “Plaza de la Independencia”, another landmark in Madrid. They got to see the Retiro Park from the bus, arrive at the Atocha train station, marvel at Neptuno and Cibeles, take Gran Via and enjoy its 19th Century buildings, arrive at Plaza de España and get some fresh air at Plaza de Oriente.

The walk was focused on small streets and hidden corners of Madrid in the 15th and 16th Century.  It is the Habsburg Madrid, they got to feel how Madrid was so many years ago: its parties, its convents, its soldiers.  They also got a glimpse of Plaza Mayor and Plaza de la Villa.
